Music & Art Therapy

The overall aim of Music Therapy is to actively engage individuals in their own growth, development and behavioral change and for them to transfer musical and nonmusical skills to other aspects of their life, bringing them from isolation into active participation in the world.

 

What does Music Therapy do?

  • Facilitates creative expression in people with deficits in communication skills.
  • Provides the opportunity for experiences that motivate learining in all domains of functioning.
  • Creates the opportunity for positive, successful social experiences not otherwise available.
  • Develops awareness of self, others and the environment that improves functioning on all levels, enhances well-being and fosters independent living.

 

The overall aim of Art Therapy is based on the conviction that the act of making art is an embodied action that reflects concretely and/or symbolically the student’s experience of being, including conflicts that the student may not be aware of.

 

What does Art Therapy do?

  • Creating art engages the whole brain and encourages integration of feeling, cognition and sensation, which can create new understanding.
  • Art making promotes self discipline.
  • Art making promotes socialization.
  • Art making can increase self-esteem and autonomy.
