Behavior Modification & Management

Good Thinking is a behavior modification program that teaches the student to replace dysfunctional thinking with responsible thinking.

The first step is to build students’ awareness of the ten most common thinking errors, and the second step is to motivate them to change (rather than you trying to change them). As students progress through the lessons, they’ll make more responsible choices, gain self-respect, attain more personal power in their lives, and earn the respect of others.

Along with the Good Thinking program, we also incorporate a token economy system. The student is given points for appropriate behavior (positive reinforcement). Points can be spent at the school store at the end of the day. Point sheets are sent home everyday in order to keep parents involved and aware of their student’s progress.

Negative or inappropriate behavior (especially attention seeking behavior) is dealt with most effectively by “Time Out” or removing the student from any attention that they might receive for the inappropriate behavior. Time Out allows them to “re-think” their behavior, take responsibility for their actions, identifiy their thinking error and replace it with responsible thinking. We provide a Responsible Thinking Room outside of regular classrooms for this to occur.
